Simple Doily

MATERIALS

  • Shuttle and ball thread
  • Coats Mercer Crochet No. 20 (or any No. 20 crochet cotton)

This doily is made up of 9 small motifs in the centre followed by two rows outlining the border. There is quite a lot of finishing off for the centre but it's worth it!

1ST MOTIF

  1. wind about 2.5 yards of thread onto the shuttle, do not cut off from ball (CTM start).
  2. R 4 DS, 3 P sep by 4 DS, 4 DS, cl. R, do not RW.
  3. R 4 DS, J to last P of previous R, 4 DS, 2 P sep by 4 DS, 4 DS, cl. R, RW.
  4. C 4 DS, P, 4 DS, RW.
  5. R 4 DS, J to last P of previous R, 4 DS, 2 P sep by 4 DS, 4 DS, cl. R, do not RW.
  6. R 4 DS, J to last P of previous R, 4 DS, 2 P sep by 4 DS, 4 DS, cl. R, RW.
  7. C 4 DS, J to P of previous C, 4 DS, RW.
  8. Repeat the last 3 steps once more.
  9. R 4 DS, J to last P of previous R, 4 DS, 2 P sep by 4 DS, 4 DS, cl. R, do not RW.
  10. R 4 DS, J to last P of previous R, 4 DS, P, 4 DS, J to 1st P of 1st R, 4 DS, cl. R, RW.
  11. C 4 DS, J to same P as previous Cs, 4 DS, J to base of 1st Ring and finish ends.

2ND MOTIF

Work exactly as 1st Motif, joining the last two Rings to the appropriate adjacent Rings of the 1st Motif.

Continue working motifs as set, joining as shown in the illustration until you have three rows of three motifs (or work to your desired size). You may find that you can adjust the amount of thread wound onto the shuttle to less than the specified amount; remember I have given a generous estimate.

1ST OUTER ROW

  1. Start at the corner of the doily, fill the shuttle and do not cut off from ball.
  2. R 4 DS, 3 P sep by 4 DS, 4 DS, cl. R, do not RW.
  3. R 4 DS, J to last P of previous R, 4 DS, 2 P sep by 4 DS, 4 DS, cl. R, RW.
  4. C 4 DS, P, 4 DS, RW.
  5. R 4 DS, J to last P of previous R, 4 DS, 2 P sep by 4 DS, 4 DS, cl. R, RW.
  6. C 4 DS, J to free P of outer corner R of 1st Motif, facing in towards the doily, 4 DS, RW.
  7. R 4 DS, J to last P of previous R, 4 DS, 2 P sep by 4 DS, 4 DS, cl. R, RW.
  8. C 4 DS, J to free P of next R of centre motif, 4 DS, RW.
  9. R 4 DS, J to last P of previous R, 4 DS, 2 P sep by 4 DS, 4 DS, cl. R, RW.
  10. C 4 DS, P, 4 DS, RW.
  11. Repeat from Step 5 to the opposite corner, working exactly as set.
  12. R 4 DS, J to last P of previous R, 4 DS, 2 P sep by 4 DS, 4 DS, cl. R, do not RW.
  13. R 4 DS, J to last P of previous R, 4 DS, 2 P sep by 4 DS, 4 DS, cl. R, RW.
  14. C 4 DS, J to P of previous C, 4 DS, RW.
  15. Repeat from Step 5 for each corner, when you get to the last corner finish exactly as the others, joining the last C to the free P of the 1st C and the last P of the last R to the 1st P of the 1st R.

OUTER ROW

  1. Wind shuttle from ball, do not cut thread.
  2. Downwards Join (or Shuttle Thread Join as it's otherwise known) to free P of 1st Ring. All joins for the Outer Row are Shuttle Thread Joins.
  3. C 4 DS, 3 P sep by 4 DS, 4 DS, J to free P of next R, do not RW.
  4. C 4 DS, P, 4 DS, J to free P of next R, do not RW.
  5. Repeat Step 4 right along the row to the next corner.
  6. Repeat Step 3 once at the corner.
  7. Work all round the doily in the same way as in Steps 5 and 6, J last C to base of 1st C and finish ends.
