Picture of Letter R

MATERIALS

  • No. 20 Crochet Cotton
  • First row shuttle and ball thread, second row two shuttles wound CTM, third row shuttle and ball thread
  • Hook for joining

SIZE

  • 4.5 cm wide, 5.5 cm high

The letter R is worked in two sections and is one of the more complex initials. Start at the bottom R on the left hand arm of the initial and work round for the inside row, then rejoin the thread to the base of the 1st R and work round for the outer row. Finally an extra chain is worked round the right hand arm - its centre is worked with a mock ring and self closing mock ring.

ROW 1

  1. For the centre row, wind shuttle from ball but do not cut off from ball thread
  2. R 4 DS, 3 P sep by 4 DS, 4 DS, cl. R, RW.
  3. C 4 DS, P, 4 DS, RW.
  4. R 4 DS, J to last P of previous R, 4 DS, 2 P sep by 4 DS, 4 DS, cl. R, RW.
  5. Repeat last R and C until there are five Rs and 4 Cs in the row. Do not RW after last R.
  6. R as before, RW.
  7. C 4 DS, J to P of previous C, 4 DS, RW.
  8. R as before, RW.
  9. C 4 DS, P, 4 DS, RW.
  10. R as before, do not RW.
  11. R as before, RW.
  12. C 4 DS, J to P of previous C, 4 DS, RW.
  13. R as before, do not RW.
  14. R as before, RW.
  15. C 4 DS, J to same P as previous C, RW.
  16. R 4 DS, J to last P of previous R, 4 DS, P, 4 DS, J to corresponding P of adjacent C, 4 DS, cl. R, RW.
  17. C 4 DS, J to corresponding P of adjacent C, 4 DS, J into appropriate space at base of R on upright arm of the initial and finish ends.

ROW 2

  1. Rejoin the thread with a lock J to the base of the 1st R, being careful to watch the direction in which you join - we are working round the base, up the left hand side and round the head of the initial on the right hand side.
  2. SH1
    C 4 DS, 3 P sep by 4 DS, 4 DS, lock J to centre P of 1st R, do not RW.
  3. SH1
C 4 DS, P, 4 DS, lock J to free P of next R, do not RW - repeat this C four times in total.
  4. SH1
    C 4 DS, 3 P sep by 4 DS, 4 DS, lock J to free P of next R, do not RW.
  5. SH1
C 4 DS, P, 4 DS, lock J to free P of next R, do not RW - repeat this C once more.
  6. SH1
C 4 DS, lock J to P joining two corner Rs, do not RW.
  7. SH1
C 4 DS, lock J to next free P, do not RW.
  8. SH1
C 4 DS, P, 4 DS, lock J to next free P, do not RW.
  9. SH1
C 4 DS, lock J to P joining two corner Rs, do not RW.
  10. SH1
C 4 DS, lock J to next free P, do not RW.
  11. SH1
C 4 DS, P, 4 DS, lock J to next free P, do not RW.
  12. SH1
Start a SCMR by dropping a loop of thread big enough for your shuttle to pass through, tension up previous C and continue with C 4 DS, J to P of previous C, 4 DS, do not RW.
  13. SH2
    R 4 DS, 3 P sep by 4 DS, 4 DS, cl. R, do not RW.
  14. SH1
C 4 DS, P, 4 DS, pass SH up through SCMR loop and draw up ring to close, tension Cs carefully.
  15. SH1
C 4 DS, P, 4 DS, lock J into the space at the base of the mock R beginning this section, do not RW.
  16. SH1
C 4 DS, J into corresponding P of adjacent C on the upright arm of the initial, 4 DS, J into appropriate spot at base of R on upright arm of the initial, finish ends.

ROW 3

  1. Lock J into the point at which the 1st mock R was joined into its adjacent C, making sure that the threads are pointing down towards the bottom of this section; we are working round to the bottom and then up towards the centre of the initial.
  2. C 4 DS, P, 4 DS, lock J into free P of SCMR, do not RW. Repeat this C once more for the SH2 R.
  3. C 6 DS, lock J into the centre P of same R, do not RW.
  4. C 6 DS, lock J into next P of same R, do not RW.
  5. C 4 DS, P, 4 DS, lock J into free P of SCMR, do not RW.
  6. C 4 DS, P, 4 DS, lock J into free P of mock R, do not RW.
  7. C 4 DS, P, 4 DS, lock J into centre P of initial as shown in the illustration, finish ends.
