MATERIALS
- 2 tatting shuttles
- No. 20 crochet cotton (I used one of the variegated Manuela threads sadly no longer available but any standard crochet cotton would be suitable for this piece
- Paper clip
- Note that you will require a very fine crochet hook for the joins in this piece otherwise you won't be able to get it into the space left by the paper clip at the centre.
SIZE
- Wind 2 shuttles without cutting the thread between them; Shuttle 1 requires only about half a yard of thread, Shuttle 2 requires about 3 yards.
- Take the paper clip and slide it to about 6 or 7 inches from SH1 to start the 1st Chain.
- SH1
C 6 DS, P, 4 DS, do not RW.
- SH2
R 4 DS, 5 P sep by 2 DS, 4 DS, cl. R, do not RW.
- SH1
C 4 DS, P, 6 DS, tighten Chain, remove Paperclip, J by SH1 thread (downwards join) to space left by Paperclip, do not rw.
- SH1
Make the 1st half of the double stitch twice, without flipping the stitch; this makes a neat turn at the base of the mock ring formed by the chain.
- SH1
C 6 DS, J to adjacent P, 4 DS, do not RW.
- Repeat from Step 4 six times more.
- SH2
R 4 DS, 5 P sep by 2 DS, 4 DS, cl. R, do not RW. There should now be 8 small rings on top of mock rings.
- SH1
C 4 DS, J to P of 1st C, 6 DS, J to base of 1st mock ring, make 2 unturned half stitches as before and finish ends.
I chose to use mock rings rather than self closing mock rings because I find this gives a neater finish, but by all means use the SCMR if you prefer.
