Picture of Letter N

MATERIALS

  • No. 20 Crochet Cotton
  • 2 Tatting Shuttles
  • Hook for joining

SIZE

  • 5 cm wide, 4.5 cm high

The letter N doubles up as the letter Z - just turn it on its side! This is a more complex initial which is worked in four sections so there is a lot of finishing of ends.

SECTION 1

  1. Sections 1 and 2 are worked in the same way, joined by the P of the two opposing sticking out rings.
  2. Start at the bottom end of the left hand section of the N.
  3. SH1
    R 4 DS, 3 P sep by 4 DS, 4 DS, cl. R, RW.
  4. SH1
    C 4 DS, P, 4 DS, RW.
  5. SH1
    R 4 DS, J to last P of previous R, 4 DS, 2 P sep by 4 DS, 4 DS, cl. R, RW.
  6. Repeat the last two steps until there are five Rs and 4 Cs.
  7. SH1
    C 4 DS, 3 P sep by 4 DS, 4 DS, J to centre P of previous R, do not RW.
  8. SH1
C 4 DS, fold the core thread of the C to form a loop approximately 2 inches in length and continue working the C, start the SCMR with 4 DS, P, 4 DS, do not RW.
  9. SH2
    R 4 DS, P, 4 DS, P, 2 DS, P, 6 DS, cl. R, do not RW.
  10. SH1
C 4 DS, P, 4 DS, put shuttle up through the SCMR loop and draw the SCMR up to close. Do not RW.
  11. SH1
C 4 DS, lock J to the free P of next R, do not RW.
  12. SH1
C 4 DS, J to the adjacent P of the SCMR, 4 DS, lock J to the free P of next R, do not RW.
  13. C 4 DS, P, 4 DS, lock J to the free P of next R, do not RW. Repeat this step once more.
  14. SH1
C 4 DS, fasten to the base of the 1st R and finish ends.

SECTION 2

Work Section 2 exactly as Section 1, joining the central P of the R made with SH2 to the same P of the R on the opposite section. Be careful to make sure everything is facing the correct way round before you close the R. Undoing closed Rs is not fun!

SECTION 3

  1. This part is a series of lock J Chains. Wind one of your SHs but do not cut off from the ball thread. Lock J to the space above the lock J just above the SCMR on either arm of the N.
  2. C 4 DS, P, 4 DS, lock J to the free P of the SCMR, do not RW.
  3. C 4 DS, P, 4 DS, lock J to the free P of the SH2 R, do not RW.
  4. C 4 DS, P, 4 DS, lock J to the free P of the next SH2 R, do not RW.
  5. C 4 DS, lock J to the P of the SCMR which was joined to the C, finish ends.

SECTION 4

This section is worked exactly as for Section 3.
