This week, we made a tile and had to think of ways for using it as design brief for a ceramic tiles manufacturer. Not only had I seen beautiful tiling at my parents' house, I do patchwork so it was no problem thinking up pretty layouts with this one!
This is the original tile we made. The tiles below it are the variations I thought up for using singly or tiling round areas, or even an entire wall!
The variation on the right is slightly different from the one on the left - if you lay it solid, you will get groups of four tiles interspersed by the plain yellow and a single tulip tile.
Here is one with a group of six tulip tiles set in the middle of a surround of plain yellow tiles.
This block has a very strong diagonal bias. In real life you would be able to set the tiles on the diagonal but with a computer you can't. However the diagonal can be used to good effect.
Here I decided to set the tiles using a traditional patchwork technique for dealing with a block which has a strong diagonal bias. The tiles are laid radiating out from the central stem, in groups of four. I think it's very pretty and effective.
