This week we were asked to showcase the use of tables and also discuss the use of music on a web page. Part of the assignment was to experiment and add music to a web page but I must say that I detest music on any web page and although it's useful to know how to do it, I have decided to refrain from doing so. There are a number of craft sites where music is used and it nearly always drives you mad after a few minutes. I'm always anxious about copyright issues too because of the problems with Napster.
In addition, I am particularly aware of this issue in relation to people with disabilities, because I myself am severely deaf and very rarely bother to surf with my hearing aid switched on! Nowadays because of the music issue I usually keep my speakers switched off. The work computers have no speakers so sound is not an issue there either as it isn't available on the PC system.
Furthermore, there are so many different tastes in the kinds of music people like that I feel any kind of music on my site would turn off half my audience and reduce the number of visitors as a result.
I have, however, had fun playing with tables. I've always liked the nested table effects, and decided to use cellpadding to create a border on this page, and cellspacing to create a margin on the main table.
Although multiple nested tables are not usually a good idea because text based browsers have difficulty with them and multiple tables can take a long time to load, I've done another table below to show a variety of techniques in spacing, padding and layout.
